WSUP Magazine

InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator
#MagazineCoverDesign #CoverDesign

For this project, I got to create a square magazine cover for the W’SUP NEWS 2023 Spring Edition Magazine: Subculture Edition. Follow the theme of Punk Subculture with a retro collage look and feel. Designing the magazine cover with on such a tight deadline and an entirely unfamiliar theme as anyone can tell by taking just one glance at my portfolio, was an intense yet creatively rewarding journey that pushed the boundaries of my design skills. I’m a designer thats more so used to grids, layouts, bright colours, and minimalism. This project just threw them ALL out the window which was quite overwhelming to say the least. The unfamiliarity of the theme required in-depth research and understanding to ensure that the design would align with the content and resonate with the target audience. However, due to the tight deadline, this was hard to manage; there came a point in the process where I was hating everything I had so far, and thought that there would be to even come up with a cover at all.

I decided to keep a cool head and head back to the researching and mood-boarding exercise that I had abandoned due to the schedule, and all of a sudden ideas started flowing through my head. While quite challenging, I viewed this experience as a chance for personal and professional growth, and learnt the further importance of how the initial design process helps with creative problem-solving.

Final Outcome
In the end, seeing the finished magazine, especially mass printed as a physical copy, was incredibly satisfying. It was a tangible testament to my ability to adapt under pressure, embrace new challenges, and produce high-quality design work within strict timelines. This experience has made me a more versatile and resilient designer, ready to tackle any future projects that come my way and boosted my confidence for working with any future unfamiliar projects.
