Rover Studios

During my week-long internship at Houston, a Sydney based design agency, I had the opportunity to work with real client projects within a professional setting with an amazing team. For one of my first projects, I got to work with Rover Studios, a start-up fashion brand with bold and contemporary pieces. I was first assigned to work up some typography based draft logo ideas for the brand. Although my design wasn't chosen as the brand was looking for a more abstract logo, the process of exploring 3D typographic styles was exhilarating and expanded my skill set. I worked with Adobe Dimension to get the accurate 3D effect and exported them as a Photoshop file to then be used as a alpha logo which can still be edited further as required in a proffessional manner.

After the client was happy with the logo, I was assigned to work on a logo animation for the brand to be used on thier socials. A significant portion of my time went in figuring out how exactly I could animate a 3D logo in a 2D manner, which didn’t seem to work. Hence, I decided to explore animating it in 3D using Adobe Substance 3D Stager. This was truly such a challenging yet gratifying experience that taught me a lot about 3D animation techniques in a more sophisticated and simple manner.

Eden Road

Another project involved creating vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator and animating them in Adobe After Effects to create promotional content for Eden Road, a notable wine brand undergoing a rebranding process with Houston. This experience was the most exciting for me personally as it allowed me to showcase my own style while contributing to a prominent brand's narrative.

Here, I got to work closely with the senior designer of Houston, which was quite thrilling; the ability to spot even the smallest of things like moving something just 0.5cms was noticable and picked at. While I think I have a pretty good eye and attention to detail. This experience showed me just how much I have yet to learn! Despite only being an intern who is still learning so much, I was complimented on my adaptibility skills which I thought was really motivating.

Community Award

Award Certificates

Additionally, I had the opportunity to design community award certificates for Glenmore Park's "Let's Get Fit Community," which hosts free boxing classes. This exposure to diverse clients, ranging from local initiatives to established brands, underscored the agency's commitment to delivering top-tier quality regardless of scale. I also got to see these get printed, and had the chance to cut and post them myself, which was such an amazing process to be a part of as opposed to only seeing and working with digital files of my work on a computer screen.

U-GO

Bento-box-layout concept
As a fun experiment, I was asked if I could come up with a Bento Box design for the client U-GO. I got to work with the senior lead motion designer for this project and had a lot of fun playing around with this layout. While only a draft layout, the team really loved my carousel design I used for the buttons, pump labels, and Instagram posts which they will be pitching to the client and potentially implement in the final design.

Reflection

Overall, my internship at Houston provided invaluable insights into how a professional design agency works. Communicating and working with experienced professionals across various fields such as motion design, packaging design, and even marketing broadened my perspective on the industry. The supportive environment helped me experience meaningful exchanges and gain real-world practical knowledge for navigating both university and professional avenues in the field of design.
