Divergent: AuDHD in Women

There is a lack of awareness regarding the severity of undiagnosed AuDHD, especially when it comes to women due to the gender bias which still previals to this day. Due to the lack of awareness amongst the medical field, society, and cultures, many women go diagnosed most of their lives, resulting in years of built up trauma which can make them more susceptible to other issues such as anxiety, depression, OCD, addiction, BPD, etc. To help tackle this, I created a motion graphics campaign as a prototype. My goal here was to create a mini-series that reflects upon the negative nuances of Autism and ADHD (AuDHD) found through my research and how to help tackle them. While targeting neurodivergent women, specifically AuDHD women in their late teens - early 20s who may or may not be diagnosed this will also act as an educational motion graphic for the general audience outside that scope. This included general public, parents, families or communities who may have neurodivergent members, mental health facilities located at local clinics and universities, and medical professionals.

If I were to expand upon this idea in the future by taking this prototype further, I would definitely survey a much larger group of people including men. This would allow me to further compare first-hand the differing experiences of men and women in the AuDHD community. I would also create a range of different motion graphics covering a wide range of topics. Another idea would be to perhaps rebrand “Divergent” to fit varying themes that come already or might come under the brand in the future.

Additionally, while initially writing the script the obvious thing would’ve been to imagine animating the scenes simultaneously, to ensure they are realistic and entertaining enough. However, this seemed to have completely slipped my mind, and something that I only realised as I struggled to animate part of the scenes; making me go back and re-write a pretty much completely new script. This took me a step back and put me behind schedule, also wasting my time and effort illustrating and animating some of the scenes that I did not end up using as they weren’t entertaining enough or didn’t fit the new script despite my best efforts of trying to edit them further. Looking back, this was probably due to the fact that this was only my second story-based animation with somewhat of a serious and research-based plot as I mostly create logo motion graphics. Regardless of the hurdles and the infuriating animation process regarding RAM issues, I was quite satisfied with the end result, especially for a prototype.

With all the trial and errors, This assessment was a great learning curve which I think will help me a lot in the future when it comes to motion design, and save me a lot of time in the long run to make up for the lost time in this assessment; I definitely believe I’ve widened my skills with After Effects more than twice the amount to where they were prior this assessment.

I acknowledge the Darug Nation as the traditional custodians of the land on which I live and work and pay my respects to elders present and emerging. This always has, and always will be Aboriginal land.
